ATMOS

Aug 18, 2021

Irish muralist Sean Atmos layers colourful strips with both curved and straight edges in order to create his striking pieces. The urban/graffiti influence and vivid colours merge together in the most brilliant way. Nowadays, his more studio-based practice produces original works on canvas, wood panels as well as fine art prints. Decreasing the scale but maintaining the same impact is a feat not easily reached. Yet Atmos does it with ease each and every time he puts spray paint to canvas.

Where are you from?

I am from Dublin, Ireland and I am based in Mart Studios.

An artist, musician, and actor you´d invite to dinner.

Super tough question, I think David Lynch covers each of those in one. I could listen to him for hours.

Describe your art in three words.

Polychromatic. Typographic. Abstraction.

Most difficult thing about creating.

Trying to harness patience with each piece and maintaining flowstate.

How did the quarantine affect your creative process?

It put things into perspective and gave me a clearer idea of what I wanted to focus on. It provided Lots of time with little distraction to work on ideas that usually get pushed to the back of the to do list.

What music do you listen to when creating?

I listen to a lot of radio mixes on NTS or the Lot radio. lots of house or techno. I really enjoy the F24 podcast, Criminal, and lots of Alan watts lectures. Also, I’ve been listening to Earl Nightingales ‘the strangest secret’ every day in the background.

How has your art has evolved over the past three years?

I was working with a team creating murals, so I found it quite hard finding a style I wanted to develop when constantly working with briefs and doing it all anonymously.

I had a love for type and anytime I was painting graffiti I wanted to make something new with lots of straight lines to practice precision. From that, I began painting layered type pieces. They just translated really well on canvas and now I almost prefer being in the studio to a wall.

Is there something creative you’d like to try?

I will soon be starting to create electronic music and motion graphics.

Have you always wanted to be an artist?

Always, I was going to become a graphic designer but I can’t sit at a desk forever, I love the balance of design days and bringing the physical, tactile work to life.

How do you stay inspired?

Surrounding myself with driven, positive people and not being hard on myself when things don’t work out the way I want them to. Going to nature when I don’t feel like painting or just taking a break and and being patient.

Most inspiring place you have visited.

Places with a good balance of Architecture and Nature. Work and life. Berlin or Amsterdam is great for wandering and thinking, working, and taking a break. I have not left Europe much but I would like to.

Favourite art gallery

MAMAC in Nice, France. I had a great time there.

An artist on Instagram that we need to follow.

I have been loving the work of:

Favourite colours to use at the moment.

Flamingo, Cloud Grey, Yosemite, Bordeaux (although the coverage is terrible).

What has been the biggest mural you´ve created?

The biggest I have created was made anonymously so it technically doesn’t count. I recently completed a 200ft x 13ft piece which was pretty big.
