KARLI HENNEMAN

Nov 22, 2020

The colours an artist use are an integral part of their final piece. It´s an election that can transmit so much just through the right combination. In Henneman´s case she opts for a serene palette which include a variety of tones from beige, subtle pinks, to stone grey. Her use of clean lines, and minimal geometric shapes create the perfect blend of bold yet elegant hard-edge art.

Where are you from?

I am currently based in Los Angeles. Born in Boise, but lived in Tokyo, Paris, New York City, and San Francisco before calling LA home.

How did the quarantine affect your creative process?

I’m incredibly motivated, focused, and productive. With most social gatherings and activities put on hold, working in my studio has because a daily source of adventure and emotional expression.

Three artists that have influenced you.

Davide Balliano, Pete Schulte, and Michelle Prazak.

Creativity is …

Freedom.

How do you get through a creative block?

I go back to a previous canvas I abandoned (because I didn’t like the outcome) and paint on top of it. Working over something that doesn’t feel “precious” allows me to be much more experimental. I’ve been pleasantly surprised how they transform.

Name an art medium you’d like to try?

Exploring “nouveau brutalism” through stone sculpture.

Three ways to describe your art.

Contrast, meditative, precise.

What do you listen to when creating?

Khruangbin, Nick Drake, Dope Lemon, Junip, and Kikagaku Moyo to name a few.

Most inspiring place you’ve visited.

Mallorca

How has your art evolved over the past 3 years?

While living in NYC, I created very colorful, dense mixed-media pieces. After giving birth to my son, I took a long break from making any art. Once I moved to LA and started painting again, I was inspired by the simplicity of light casting shadows and forming geometric shapes on the walls in my home. Less became more.

Favourite colours to use at the moment.

Salmon pink, dusty blue, endless tones of off-white.

Three tips for becoming a professional artist.

  1. Consistently keep making new work and share it through your social media outlets.
  2. Apply to as many art contests and publications that inspire you and resonate with the style of art you create.
  3. Build meaningful friendships and create a community with other artists.

One of your favourite quote to live by.

“What’s right about this that I’m not getting?”
