Griese draws inspiration from both nature and urban environments, as well as a desire to discover new relationships between colour and form. This journey manifests itself into a vivid interplay between organic shapes and contrasting tones that result in her masterful abstract pieces.

Where are you from?

St Catharines  Ontario, Canada.

An artist, musician, and actor you´d invite to dinner.

I have always thought it would be interesting to have a conversation with Paul Klee about colour, design, Gord Downie on music and literature, and director Wim Wenders on film.

Describe your art in three words.

Uplifting, Colourful, Hardedge.

Have you always wanted to be an artist?

As a child, I wanted to become a poet and teacher, but I also knew, having been interested in drawing and creating from an early age,  that I would be involved in the arts in some way.

How did the quarantine affect your creative process?

Fortunately, my creative process was not greatly affected by the quarantine since I have worked from my home for many years and already had a well-established work routine.

What inspires your colour palette choices?

I am always looking to my surroundings for inspiration, whether I am in nature or in an urban setting, collecting mental images of colours, shapes or forms that catch my eye. I take these images with me back to the studio where they show up in my sketchbooks or may become the starting point of a new art piece.

How has your art has evolved over the past three years?

Over the last three years, my work has gotten larger, more precise with more simplistic geometric shapes.

Is there something creative you’d like to try?

I have always wanted to dance.

What music do you listen to while creating?

While working I tend to listen to podcasts, but when I do want to hear music I have quite a range of music I listen to. I often go to my favourite Canadian artists, 8o’s new wave or choose quiet classical pieces to paint by.

How do you keep creativity flowing?

I have many interests so I am continually reading, listening to podcasts or books, observing my surroundings and working out ideas in my studio.

“Part of creating is wrestling through my ideas and design process when I begin a work of art- It requires getting quiet and persevering.´´ – Marion Griese

What’s the most difficult aspect of creating for you?

What I find the most difficult, (and also sometimes the most rewarding) part of creating is wrestling through my ideas and design process when I begin a work of art. It requires getting quiet and persevering.

Most inspiring place you have visited?

Before covid, I had the opportunity to travel to Barcelona for the first time and was impressed and inspired by its beauty.

Favourite art movement.

I am continually inspired by the artists and designers of the Bauhaus and the Mid Century modern time period.

An artist on Instagram that we need to follow.

“I am so interested in how notes of colour can play off of one another to transport and even transform us. My current work begins with lines rooted in organic shapes to form the structure of the composition. Sinuous lines intersect across the canvas to reveal shapes which are then given colour from a palette I observe around me, or sometimes draw from the hues of memories, poetry, or music. The intertwining of the creative challenge and sense of serenity I experience when composing my paintings is what I find most compelling and rewarding.´´ – Marion Griese
